You've thought about playing mahjong online, but aren't sure if it's the right fit for you.
After this, you ought to feel more confident.
So you're getting ready to go to weekly mahjongg game, and just as you're about to leave the house you receive a text from the host that reads “I have to cancel for today.” Your heart skips a beat, you lose your breath, and you have to grab something to keep from falling. It's a sad, sad day.
If you've ever experienced this kind of tragedy, it might just be the right time to learn to play your favorite game online. Now don't get me wrong, I love an in-person game for all the same reasons you do... But there are many reasons to play online. Just hear me out.
·You don’t have a weekly group to play with
·You live in a remote area with no other players nearby
·You’d simply like to play more
·The crappy weather has you stuck at home
·Your schedule doesn’t match up with others
·You prefer the company of dogs to humans
Now lets’ cover the myriad of benefits to online play
·Most platforms offer the option to play different styles of mahjong
·You get to practice with bots, play with people from all over the world, or play in a group with YOUR friends.
·You can practice your skills without the pressure of an in-person game, do practice exercises to improve your game, learn your card faster, and even track your progress
·You can join an online tournament, which is way less scary than an in-person one. And a lot cheaper.
And here are a some additional, and not so obvious perks
· Some platforms offer ‘suggested hands’ which is a great tool for newer players. Just be careful not to use it as a crutch.
· There’s no building of the walls, which is a big time saver
· You don’t have to keep track of the Charleston
For some of you, that’s the best news you’ve heard in a long time!
Now if that’s not enough for you, how’s this for size.. FREE. Yup, you can try all of the mahjong platforms for free. Test them all out, and choose your favorite based on what they offer, their graphics, their ease of play, etc. Then, you have the option to subscribe to one that’s right for you. Subscriptions are anywhere between $5-6 bucks a month. That’s the price of one specialty coffee, and definitely a worthwhile investment.
Keep in mind, you do need to have a NMJL card in front of you to play (if of course, you are playing American style). Some sites even allow you to use older cards. A little advice here.. if you choose to play with humans, most will be using the recent card.
Now as an instructor and enthusiast, I have tried ALL the mahjong platforms, and I am excited to share that I have partnered up with one of my favorites. Why is it a favorite? Well, it allows me to teach, and benefit from all their added tools that most sites don’t offer. I also love the interface. Their graphics are clear and big, and the game is very user friendly. It feels like a real game to me and offers video chat (optional). And to boot, they offer three levels of bots, practice mode and can track your game statistics, and much more.
Curious to know which one?. I Love Mahj steals the show.
